Swim Safety

A swim briefing document detailing all aspects of swim safety should be read out at all training sessions. The contents of the briefing should be noted and obeyed. The briefing will outline the various safety precautions that should be understood before swimming in Open Water.

Basic Rules

  •  NO ONE SWIMS ALONE

  • Everyone swims in pods of equal ability. Stronger Swimmers should swim in orbit around weaker swimmers.

  •  Everyone should swim parallel to the shore and travel in the same direction.

  • Where possible a kayaker will supervise swim. This duty will be allotted on a rotational basis and must be completed by all members at least once during the open water season.

  •  The kayaker will carry fresh water, a life jacket and a throw -buoy.

  • Under NO circumstances:  should any member or individual Swim on their own in open water.
  • Nor should any member swim in open water when there is a small craft warning in place or if designated officer decides that the conditions are not suitable for open water swimming

  • At all swim training sessions a roll should be called and noted down before and after each session.

  • If any swimmer exits the session early that swimmer must notify others before leaving. This roll will be kept in a water tight bag on shore and marked “SWIMMERS ROLL”

Club Logo

Our Club Logo includes an elliptical arch representing Bricin Bridge the landmark meeting of Muckross Lake and Lough Lein. A sea Lamprey forms the outer circle of the Logo. The Lamprey begins its life in the Upper Lake, makes its way to the sea and returns to the lake at the end of its life cycle after a life at sea in the Atlantic Ocean. The Lampreys’ journey represents the journey that many of us make each year from the lake to the sea and back again.
